Mr. Williams was a native of Buncombe County and was a son of the late A.C. and Mary Fortune Williams. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lena Mae Rogers Williams who died in 1996, and by two brothers R. Bruce Williams and Guy K. Williams. He was a member of Biltmore United Methodist Church for 83 years and was a 52 year member of Biltmore Masonic Lodge #446 and a 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason. At the time of his death he was a vice-president of Roger F. Williams Co. (WILLCO).

Mr. Williams was a Cumbustion Engineer and early in his career he designed and supervised the building of the power house for American Enka. He converted the Biltmore House from the original coal stoker furnace to an oil burning system. He also designed and built pottery kilns and a revolutionary system for furniture manufacturers by which they could burn wood chips which would have as a by-product the production of steam for the furniture plants, utilizing gas, oil and coal as backup systems.

He is survived by two daughters, Nancy McCurry of Mills River and Mary Ann Ingle of Asheville; three sons, Joel A. Williams, Jr. and his wife Jeanne of Dalton, GA, Roger F. Williams and his wife Marlene of Asheville and Kenneth C. Williams of Hendersonville; eleven grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren; three sisters Elizabeth W. Bostic of Arden, Sara Marie Bryson of Asheville and Evelyn W. Powers of Jacksonville, FL; one brother Conrad F. Williams of Arden.

A funeral service will be at 6:00 p.m. Saturday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Ronnie Owen and the Rev. Ashley Crowder Stanley officiating.

Interment with Masonic Rites conducted by the Biltmore Lodge will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Piney Mountain United Methodist Church Cemetery in Candler.

His family will receive friends Saturday evening at the funeral home following the service. At other times the family will be at the residence, 5 Dogwood Road and suggest that memorials be made to Biltmore Masonic Lodge #446 Building Fund, PO Box 5457, Asheville, NC 28813.
