Gertrude Jones Brown, 90, of Leicester, died January 1, 2006 at her home after a period of declining health.
A native of Opelika, Alabama, she spent most of her life in Candler. She was the daughter of the late Percy and Edwina Loosen Jones. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Boyce Raymond Brown Sr. who died in 1973 and her brother, Russell Jones.
Gertrude attended St. Genevieve’s and Women’s College now UNC Greensboro. She was a teacher at Barnardsville, Sand Hill and Leicester schools. She served in the WACS during WWII and worked at the Buncombe County Department of Social Services from 1963 until her retirement in 1980.
She was a member of Montmorenci United Methodist Church and the Gudger Cabe Sunday School Class and the Mary Martha United Methodist Women’s Circle.
Surviving are her three children, Harriett Brown of Hartwell, GA; Boyce Raymond Brown Jr. and wife, Angela Mae, of Candler and Edwina Mintz and husband, Boyd, of Leicester; three grandchildren, Charlie Boyce Raymond Brown and Angie Brown of Candler and Violet Mintz Clark and husband, Keith, of Grapevine; one great-grandchild, Isaiah Brown.
Gertrude was a caring, loving mother and strong woman who will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
The family wishes to thank Sue Hudgins and Susan Passmore who lovingly cared for Gertrude in her home. The family also wishes to express their gratitude to the staff of Cancer Care Center and the staff of Advanced Home Care.
A funeral service will be 3:00 p.m. Thursday at Montmorenci United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dan Lyons and Rev. Dr. Neil Haynes officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7:00-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue and at other times wil be at the home of her daughter, Edwina Mintz.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Handicap Accessibility Fund at Montmorenci United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 610 Candler, NC 28715.
