William "Bill" Fayne Shope, 81, of Mills River, died Saturday, July 29, 2006 after a short illness.
A native of Candler, he was the son of the late Terrell V. and Jennie Caldwell Shope.
He was a retired electrician and was proud of his part in the construction of the Twin Towers in New York City, having installed the elevators. He was a World War II Veteran and served with his twin brother in the US Navy Air Corps at the Naval Air Station in Kodiak, AK.
Bill is survived by his wife of eight years, Kathleen Mary Alexander Shope; two sons, Terry Shope and Donnie Shope and his wife, Nancy, all of Arden; one daughter, Janice Moore and her husband, Alan of Swannanoa; his twin brother, Wayne J. Shope and his wife, Mary of Charlotte; two sisters, Leila Trull of Blairsville, GA and Dorothy Cooper of Randleman, NC as well as several nieces and nephews.
He is also survived by eight step-children, Carolyn F. McLemore and her husband, Isaac of Louisville, TN, Rebecca D. Briggs and her husband, Harold of Easley, SC, Donald J. Alexander and his wife, Melba, Mary K. Alexander, William E. Alexander and his wife, Jackie, Dennis C. Alexander, Douglas C. Alexander all of Asheville, Sharon A. Robinson and her husband, Jeff of Leicester; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; twenty-two step-grandchildren and twenty-six step-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his late wife of fifty-two years, Glenna K. Baldwin Shope; one brother, Kenneth Shope and two sisters, Lois Hoover and Nellie Cathey.
Bill was a member, former deacon and teacher at Fletcher First Baptist Church, which he dearly loved. He loved his family and many friends and neighbors, including the "Hardee's Breakfast Gang" in Fletcher. Bill was an avid amateur radio operator for more than fifty years. "K4JCR" will be missed by his HAM radio friends, most of all by his twin brother, Wayne.
Bill's other favorite activities included playing his autoharp, singing, photography and daily witnessing and praising the Lord.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, August 1, 2006 at Fletcher First Baptist Church with the Reverend Roy Waldroup officiating. Interment will follow at Pisgah View Memorial Park. Military graveside honors will be conducted by the Buncombe County Veterans Memorial Team.
The family will receive friends from 7:00-8:30 PM on Monday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the 3rd Floor Oncology Center of Pardee Hospital, 800 N. Justice St., Hendersonville, NC 28791 or to Four Seasons Hospice and Palliative Care, 581 South Allen Rd., Flat Rock, NC 28731.
