The Rev. Robert E. Harris, 83, of Asheville, NC departed this life suddenly, Monday, May 14, 2007, at his life-long residence.
A native of Buncombe Co., Rev. Harris was born on June 13, 1923, and was a son of the late Brad and Mary Edith Wright Harris. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Bill Harris, and Betty Harris Collins.
He pastored The Chapel in Asheville for 57 years. He also operated a drive-in church in an open air shopping center for 47 years.
Rev. Harris could also be heard on the radio during the show, “Dial-A-Prayer,” which was broadcast in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Tennessee for over 40 years. In print, Rev. Harris’ “The Story of Jesus Monthly Bulletin” ran for 45 years. He also founded the Robert E. Harris Biblical Museum in Asheville, which has been in existence for over 40 years, and founded the Asheville Alzheimer’s Care Center and operated it for 30 years.
Rev. Harris is survived by his nieces, Joanne Agnus Parker, Mary Jeanette Oliver, Virginia Rose Frabizio, Bonita Clare Patton, and Elizabeth Ann Huffman; and nephew, Bradley Thomas Harris.
A funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday at the Groce Funeral Home chapel on Patton Ave. with the Revs. Weldon Ramsey and Kenny Gillum officiating. Interment will follow at Green Hills Cemetery.
His family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
