James Edward Smith, 66, of Asheville, died Sunday, July 8, 2012, at Mission Hospital.
A native of Buncombe Co., he was a son of the late Joseph and Mary Gibson Smith. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Frances Miller.
Mr. Smith worked for the City of Asheville as a security guard for 27 years. He loved animals, and especially enjoyed taking care of all of the neighborhood cats.
He is survived by a sister, Daisy Keith and her husband, Charles; a brother, Fred Smith and his wife, Mary Jo, of Asheville; nephew Eric Keith; nieces Stacey Keith Woody and her husband Don, and Misty Keith; grand-nephews Kyle Keith and Kendall Keith and his wife, Marcy; also survived by several nieces and numerous friends.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday in the Patton Ave. chapel of Groce Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Dix Creek United Methodist Church Cemetery.
His family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
